Advanced Physiotherapy
All of our physiotherapists have a university degree in physiotherapy and focus on a direct "hands-on" approach to your treatment. Back On Track places great value on continuing education for our staff -- in fact, some have received national certification by completing specialization exams in manual and manipulative therapy and are now instructors/assistants for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

Our physiotherapists are constantly updating their skills and knowledge in orthopaedics and sports injury. Staying current with the latest techniques, treatments, and research allows them to offer the best possible treatment, improved quality of care, and better results for their clients. This in combination with our emphasis on direct care and true one-on-one time with the client allows us to offer a very valuable and trusted service to our clients and referral sources.

Our goal at Back On Track is to achieve for our clients functional independence through excellence in education, manual therapy, and exercise.

Post - MVA Rehabilitation
All MVA clients receive a detailed assessment that includes a biomechanical and functional physical evaluation. Each client's treatment program is prescribed based on the analysis of the assessment findings along with work demands analysis (if applicable).

The goal is to restore the functional abilities needed for activities of daily living, work, and sport/recreation. Initial emphasis is placed on pain reduction and optimizing healing of injured tissues; as soon as possible, the client is given active/functional exercise to promote mobility and "participation" in the treatment. An ongoing passive approach to the rehab process will foster dependence - this is discouraged. The early goals include teaching the client skills to control their pain.

As rehab progresses emphasis is on education, flexibility, muscular conditioning, and aerobic exercise. The number of sessions required depends on certain variables including degree/chronicity of injuries, past history /pre-existing conditions, abilities, and needs.

Communication with the adjuster, attending physician, and other involved healthcare professionals is essential. The client is followed as they move back into normal activities; often a fitness program is implemented and follow-up with the physiotherapist may be required. Support during this phase of their rehabilitation is often crucial to their long-term success.

Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy involves the kneading and manipulation of soft tissues to gain a therapeutic response. Many people think physiotherapy and massage therapy are the same thing or very similar; in fact they are quite unique and different from each other. Massage Therapy is great for decreasing the development of painful muscular patterning after trauma/injury and for accelerating rate of recovery.

A Registered Massage Therapist requires enrollment in a government- approved massage therapy school. They receive over 2200 hours of anatomical, physiological, and clinical education along with intensive practical instruction. They then pass a provincial exam and become licensed and registered under the Regulated Health Professions Act.

At Back On Track, we provide therapeutic massage by a Registered Massage Therapist for chronic pain, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, muscle spasms, and many other conditions. Clients suffering from headaches, whiplash, arthritic pain, and muscular pain during pregnancy often respond very favourably as well to massage therapy. We find that in some cases physiotherapy and massage therapy compliment each other extremely well; they may be focusing on different structures yet at the same time trying to improve function of the same region.

Whether its Swedish Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, or just Relaxation Treatment, most people are significantly surprised at first by the truly therapeutic effects of Massage Therapy. It is a powerful adjunct and wonderful compliment in the treatment of acute and chronic injuries. As well, many people don't realize that most extended healthcare plans have separate coverage for massage.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that has been around for thousands of years. It has evolved into a very accepted form of treatment that is used to control or eliminate pain, speed recovery, and improve function.

It involves the insertion of very fine needles (disposable one-time-use sterilized needles) through the skin at very specific acupuncture points. There is no injection of substances. It has anti-inflammatory effect and stimulates the release of pain-relieving endorphins.

At Back On Track, we will use it in conjunction with other forms of treatment to either enhance recovery or to reduce acute symptoms and allow a quicker progression to manual therapy and functional exercise. Treatment with acupuncture can produce rapid results but more often requires several sessions over a period of time. There is usually some change after 5-6 treatments. Conditions such as headaches, whiplash, sciatica, and tendonitis are just some of the injuries that can respond very well to acupuncture.
